- Google Firebase —
- Google Mobile Ads —
- Google Maps —

Sekka helps you get around Cairo by public transport. This page explains what the app collects, why, and who it goes to.
Sekka has no accounts. We never ask for your name, email address, or phone number.
Your device identifier
The first time the app sends anything — a search with the Help improve Sekka switch on, or a report you send yourself — it generates a random number (a UUID), stores it on your device, and sends it with everything it sends after that, so we can tell what came from the same device. It is never created before then: a device that has sent nothing has no identifier. It is not linked to you, and we cannot use it to identify you.
You can see it in the app under Profile → About Sekka, and tap to copy it. To reset it, clear the app's data in your device settings — a new one is created the next time the app sends something. Uninstalling and reinstalling also gives you a new one, because we have turned off Android's backup of the app's data.
Location
If you grant location permission, your location is used on your device to find the nearest stop as a starting point. It is optional — you can search for a stop or pick one on the map instead.
Your location reaches others in these cases:
- Correcting a stop's position: the point you pick on the map is sent to us. The map opens at your current location if you have allowed that, so if you don't move it, the point is near where you are.
- Suggesting a route: the points you place for each leg — where you board, where you get off, and any points along the way — are sent to us as coordinates you chose.
- Suggesting a place we're missing: the exact point you mark is sent to us, unrounded. The map opens at your own position when you have allowed location, so a crosshair you don't move sends where you are.
- A search started from your location: your coordinates are not sent. What is sent is the nearest stop we matched and how far you were from it, in metres — a distance to a known point, not your position. This is what the app means by "no location" on the Help improve Sekka switch: no position ever leaves your phone automatically.
- Maps of Cairo: built into the app and read from your device, so no request leaves the phone to show them. Outside that area, map tiles load from OpenFreeMap's servers, which receive your IP address and the map area being viewed, and nothing else. Once a week the app also refreshes a small map index file from OpenFreeMap; that request carries only your IP address.
- The Directions button: opens whichever maps app is on your device and passes it the destination only — Sekka does not send your starting point. That app then uses your location under its own permissions.
- Pasting a shortened maps link: Sekka opens the link to find the destination, and that request reaches Google carrying your IP address.
Saved places and recent trips are kept on your device only. A saved place's name never leaves the phone; if you use one in a search or a route suggestion, only its coordinates travel.
How you use the app
Two things are collected automatically:
- Searches: your start and destination stops and how many results came back — this shows us where our data has gaps. If a search started from your location or a point on the map, the distance in metres between that point and the stop we matched is sent too (see Location above).
- Routes you open: which route's details you opened — this shows us which routes get used most.
These two, and only these two, are controlled by the Help improve Sekka switch. It is shown when you first set up the app, and you can change it any time under Profile → Data. It is on by default, and turning it off stops both completely. It does not control the reports you send yourself (below), the map, notifications, or ads.
Reports you send yourself
- Journey feedback (👍 or 👎 with an optional reason)
- Fares you report
- Requests for routes we're missing — text you write, up to 280 characters
- Stop reports: confirming a name, suggesting a corrected name, or a corrected position
- Route suggestions: a route you describe leg by leg — the vehicle's name as you write it, the points where you board and get off and any points along the way (as coordinates you place on the map), and an optional note up to 280 characters
- Missing places: a stop or place you mark on the map — the name you type for it, its exact coordinates, and an optional note up to 280 characters
These are sent when you tap submit, and the Help improve Sekka switch does not control them, because sending them is already a choice. Each one carries the device identifier described above.
Whatever you type into a route request or a route suggestion reaches us as written — don't put anything in it you'd rather not share.
Everything the app sends is write-only: no app, including your own copy, can read it back.
Places we're missing. The map picker has an Add stop for review button. It opens a screen where you mark the spot and type the name people call it; nothing is sent until you tap Send for everyone there. What reaches us is that name, the exact coordinates you marked — not rounded — an optional note of up to 280 characters, and the same device identifier, platform, app version and time that every other report carries. The Help improve Sekka switch does not control it. We check each one by hand, and if it is right we add the name to Sekka's transit data, where it appears in search for every rider — the screen says so before you send, and asks for the name everyone uses rather than your own. There is no way to edit or withdraw a suggestion inside Sekka; a deletion request (below) removes what you sent, but a name already added to the transit data stays there as part of that data, no longer attached to your device identifier.
Technical details
Everything sent — reports and usage data alike — includes your platform (Android or iOS) and the time it was sent; reports and searches also include the app version.
Why we collect it
- To run the app: finding journeys, showing stops, and keeping duplicate reports out.
- To improve the data: Cairo's transport network — especially the microbus routes — has no official documentation. Your reports are what make it more accurate.
We do not sell your data, and we do not use it to track you across other apps.
Advertising
Sekka includes the Google Mobile Ads SDK, part of which starts with the app. The app requests permission to read your device's advertising ID — a system-level identifier, separate from the random number Sekka generates, which you can reset or limit in your device settings. When an ad is shown, Google collects that ID and data about the ad under its own privacy policy. The Help improve Sekka switch does not control this.
Sekka currently shows no ads. The library is present so ads can be enabled later, and this page will be updated when ads actually start showing.
Third parties
- Google Firebase — stores what the app sends and delivers transit data updates, processing them on our behalf.
- Google Mobile Ads — as described above. This is the only party we share data with for their own purposes.
- OpenFreeMap — map tiles outside Cairo, and a small index file refreshed weekly. Cairo's maps are built into the app.
- Google Maps — when you tap Directions or paste a shortened link.
- Firebase Cloud Messaging — sends announcements to all users. To do that, Google keeps a push token for your device on its servers, as it does for any app that uses the service; Sekka never stores that token, every device subscribes to one shared channel, and the app has no way to message one person. The "did you make it?" reminder after a trip is scheduled on your device itself and passes through no server.
How long we keep it
We keep reports for as long as they are useful for improving the transit data. There is currently no automatic deletion.
To request deletion, email sekkaproj@gmail.com and include your device identifier from the About screen — without it we cannot tell which reports are yours.
Children
Sekka is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes to this policy
If what we collect or why changes, we update this page and change the date at the top.
